How does a court gain jurisdiction over a case?
In order for a case to be heard by a given court, that court must have jurisdiction. Jurisdiction is made up of three integral pieces: personal jurisdiction, subject matter jurisdiction, and venue. Personal jurisdiction applies to the people involved in the case, subject matter applies to the subject of the case, and venue refers to the location of the defendants and the lawsuit.
