BAE Systems employee killed in workplace accident

Posted on October 25th, 2010 No Comments

Last week, a BAE Systems employee passed away five days after a workplace accident involving a defective cherry picker at the company’s defense plant in West Manchester Township.

63-year old Dale Lentz was operating a lift similar to a cherry picker when he became pinned between an overhead garage door and the lift.  An employee found Lentz crushed and unconscious at around 7:30 A.M..  Lentz was transported to York Hospital for his injuries and passed away five days later from the injuries he sustained the in workplace accident.

Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigators are working on determining what caused the accident and why the lift was defective.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Lentz’s family and friends during this difficult time.

Friday evening, a fireworks accident occurred just outside Scranton at the PNC Field minor league baseball stadium in Moosic, Pennsylvania after the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees game.  The accident happened during the post-game fireworks display and left two pyrotechnics company employees injured.

The two workers’ names and injuries have not yet been released, however a family member of one of the workers told reports that they were in stable condition.  A Pennsylvania state fire marshal and a team of investigators are looking into the cause of the accident that injured the two workers.

OSHA cannot ban dangerous procedure yet

Posted on August 17th, 2010 No Comments

The Occupational Safety and Hazard Association announced earlier this month that they are unable to ban the unsafe pipe cleaning procedure using flammable natural gas that led to the February construction power plant blast at the Kleen Energy Systems plant in Middleton, Connecticut.  OSHA officials say they will send a letter of warning to the power industry concerning the practice, but currently they do not have enough information on the subject to completely ban it.  David Michaels, an OSHA administrator, stated, “We would love to be able to ban it, but we can’t”.

The announcement comes just after another announcement of proposed fines of $16.6 million to the contractors and construction companies working for Kleen Engery Systems.  The plant was attempting to clear debris from a supply pipe using flammable natural gas when the explosion occurred, leaving six dead and fifty injured.
