A Harrisburg woman and four others were injured in a Maryland car accident Sunday night.

According to officials with the Maryland State Police, a hit-and-run crash occurred in Washington County near the Frederick County line shortly before 10:00 p.m. Police say a 1999 Mercury Cougar driven by 37 year-old Penny Marie Shifflett, of Frederick, Md., was traveling west in Washington County when an unknown vehicle struck the rear of the Cougar, causing the car to lose control, go off the right side of the roadway, and overturn.

Shifflett and three juvenile passengers were injured in the accident. The four victims were transported by ground ambulance to Meritus Medical Center, all with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.

An adult passenger in the Cougar, 28 year-old Erin Lorraine Benjamin, of Harrisburg, Pa., was flown by state police helicopter to R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with serious injuries, the release said.

The striking vehicle, described by callers as a four-door sedan, possibly a Pontiac or similar GM product, failed to remain at the scene of the collision, police said.

According to officials with the Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven, a Richland man and Harrisburg woman were uninjured in a single-vehicle car accident. A man was killed in a Harrisburg car accident Tuesday afternoon.

According to officials with the Schuylikill County Sheriff’s Department, 45 year-old Norman Tuttle was pronounced dead at the scene of a two vehicle accident on Route 125 in Eldred Township. Deputies said Tuttle was traveling north on Route 125 in a tractor-trailer transporting a load of potatoes. PA Rep. fights for bill to ban cell phone use on the road

Posted on February 1st, 2011 No Comments

Pennsylvania state Representative Josh Shapiro is fighting to have his bill to ban cell phone use on the road passed this legislative session.  The proposal, House Bill 330, is a combination of two bills that were considered but not passed last session.  House Bill 330 includes stricter rules for teen drivers and cell phone usage on the road as in the previous House Bill 67 and stricter rules for adult drivers and cell phone usage on the road as in House Bill 2070.

The newest bill differs from the previous bills in that it completely bans cell phone usage on the road except for adults using a hands-free device.  Violations of any of the new laws would be considered primary offenses.  A primary offense means that an officer can pull a driver over for committing the offense.  On the contrary, secondary offenses can only be issued if an officer has pulled a driver over for committing a primary offense.  Most legislation concerning cell phone use in cars has made violations secondary offenses.
