A Harrisburg woman and four others were injured in a Maryland car accident Sunday night.
According to officials with the Maryland State Police, a hit-and-run crash occurred in Washington County near the Frederick County line shortly before 10:00 p.m. Police say a 1999 Mercury Cougar driven by 37 year-old Penny Marie Shifflett, of Frederick, Md., was traveling west in Washington County when an unknown vehicle struck the rear of the Cougar, causing the car to lose control, go off the right side of the roadway, and overturn.
Shifflett and three juvenile passengers were injured in the accident. The four victims were transported by ground ambulance to Meritus Medical Center, all with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
An adult passenger in the Cougar, 28 year-old Erin Lorraine Benjamin, of Harrisburg, Pa., was flown by state police helicopter to R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with serious injuries, the release said.
The striking vehicle, described by callers as a four-door sedan, possibly a Pontiac or similar GM product, failed to remain at the scene of the collision, police said.
