Interstate collisions leave 3 dead in Pennsylvania
Posted on Tuesday, February 28th, 2012 at 6:26 pm
Harsh weather conditions caused numerous pileups on Pennsylvania interstates on Saturday afternoon. The car accidents occurred on Interstate 80 and Interstate 79 in northwestern Pennsylvania.
The first pileup involved roughly 20 vehicles and tractor trailers that were traveling near Clintonville. Police in the area said that there were at least six injuries resulting from the accidents, and two people lost their lives. Intense snow caused a whiteout along the interstate, and that is said to have played a large factor in the collisions.
A larger pile up took place earlier during the day on Saturday along Interstate 79. These accidents involved more than 40 vehicles, leaving more than 20 people injured, one fatally. The interstate was shut down for more than three hours while the crash was assessed, and people were treated for injuries.
Arsenic found in organic food products
Posted on Monday, February 20th, 2012 at 8:59 pm
A study that was published in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal shows that organic brown rice syrup may be a source of arsenic.
Organic brown rice syrup is used in several organic food products as a replacement for high fructose corn syrup. This syrup has been recorded in baby formulas, energy shots, and cereal bars. The arsenic that is found within this syrup has been classified as inorganic arsenic. This type of arsenic can increase a person’s chances of developing cancer, diabetes, and also heart disease.
Currently, there are no regulations in place by the FDA that regard arsenic levels in food consumption. It is believed that young children and infants are more susceptible to the high levels of arsenic due to their size.

Birth control recall affects one million packages
Posted on Tuesday, February 7th, 2012 at 6:47 pm
The leading pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, Inc., has announced a national recall of the birth control brand, Lo/Ovral.
This recall was due to a packaging error made by the manufacturing company. These packages of birth control are supposed to contain 21 active birth control pills and seven placebo pills. Some of the defective packets included more active pills than they should and others had sugar pills that were placed out of order.
These mistakes could potentially lead to unsuspected pregnancies in women. Pfizer, Inc. believes that this error only affects approximately 30 packages, but they wanted to be safe so the recall included one million packages of the brand, as well as it’s generic version.

The cruise ship, Costa Concordia, crashed into rocks near the coast of Giglio, Italy on Friday and numerous injuries and casualties have been reported.
The ship was carrying 4,200 passengers. Of those people, there have been six confirmed dead and 16 are missing. Reports are claiming that the captain of the ship moved the cruise liner too close to the shore and struck a large pile of rocks in the water.
