Drug producer Pfizer recently recalled 38,000 bottles of 40 mg Lipitor tablets sold in the United States. Pfizer issued the recall after complaints of an uncharacteristic smell coming from the packaging of the product. According to the company, a third party is used in the bottling of the drug Lipitor.
190,000 bottles of the drug were recalled earlier this year for similar reasons. Research of the recalled products has shown the odor was most likely caused by a chemical used to preserve wood and often used on wooden pallets used to transport products. However, Pfizer says that they prohibit the use of any of this chemically treated wood in the shipment of their products.
