According to the Morgan County Sheriffs Department an eyewitness observed the family's van cross the center line into the southbound lane a quarter-mile south of Tabor Road. The oncoming tractor-trailer attempted to avoid the van by swerving to the left, while the van's driver went right hitting the truck head on. The driver Fred T. Lecrone Sr., 78, and his wife Gail Lecrone, 78, as well as their son Fred T. Lecrone Jr., 47, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver was taken to War Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. US 522 was shut down for over three hours following the incident. The accident is still under investigation by police.
