PSU Student Dies in Car Crash

A 20-year-old Penn State student died after her car hit a tree in a single car crash accident.

The woman was driving eastbound on Route 322 when her car ran off the road and hit a tree in the median. According to her Facebook page, she was on her way home back to Boston. She was the only on in the car and was wearing her seatbelt restraint.

Massive Snowfall in Fredericksburg Puts Drivers at Risk

A rare December storm left Fredericksburg residents under 20 inches of snow, creating hazardous conditions on heavily traveled roadways. State Police report that they received over 3,000 calls about disabled vehicles and collisions.

 One traffic death was reported after a Pennsylvania man traveling westbound on Interstate 66 was killed when his Ford F-250 truck struck a tractor-trailer that was moving slowly along the roadway.

Study Ranks Most Accident-Prone Occupations, Students Rank No. 1

A new study released by Quality Planning Corporation showsthat students are the group mostly to be involved in car accidents, whilefarmers were the least.

The California firm that verifies information in cooperationwith insurance companies found that students were more frequently involved incar accidents than anyone else. Second on the list were doctors, followed bylawyers, architects and real estate agents.

Farmers, though ranked as the safest drivers, came inseventh in the number of speeding tickets they received.

Company spokesman Tim Cox attributes the large amount ofstudent crashes to a lack of experience behind the wheel. The report showedthat for every 1,000 students there are about 152 car accidents and 87 speedingtickets per year. For doctors there were 109 car crashes and 44 speedingtickets per 1,000. For lawyers, 106 car accidents and 37 speeding tickets.

The other professions in the top ten were enlisted militarypersonnel, social workers, manual laborers, analysts, engineers andconsultants.

Toyota to Replace 3.8 Million Gas Pedals

Toyota Motor Corp. announced that it will replace or reshapeaccelerator pedals on 3.8 million vehicles as a response to an unintendedacceleration problem that has caused at least one fatal accident. It is thelarges recall in the company’s history.

Vehicles affected by the recall are: 2007-20010 Camrys,2005-2010 Avalons, 2004-2009 Prius’, 2005-2010 Tacomas, 2007-2010 Tundras,2007-2010 Lexus ES 350, 2006 – 2010 Lexus IS 250 and IS350.

The car manufacturer will shorten the gas pedals on somemodels and reconfigure the floor surface beneath the pedal on all Avalons,Camrys and Lexus’

The car company also announced it will install a brakeoverride system on the Camrys, Avalons and Lexus’.  The brake system overhaul is the result of talks betweenToyota and the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Man Killed in I-78 Collision with Semi

The driver of a minivan is dead following a chain reactioncrash on Interstate 78.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, 37-year-old DarrenWhipple, crashed his minivan into the rear of a tractor trailer shortly before4:30 p.m on I-78 in upper Tulpehocken Township. The tractor-trailer wasreportedly slowing to enter a construction zone and was forced by the impact ofthe minivan into the back of a truck hauling an oversized load.

Whipple was transported by emergency services to Readinghospital, where he died a short time later. The driver of the tractor-trailerwas also taken to Reading but state police had no information on the extent ofhis injuries.

Man Killed in ATV

A Hyndman man was killed Sunday after he lost control of anall-terrain vehicle near Fairhope road.

32 year-old Corey R. Clites was operating a PolarisSportsmen XP Twin 850cc ATV east of Fairhope Road. Pennsylvania State Policesaid that Clites drove off of the roadway and the vehicle flipped severaltimes. He was transported to Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

State Trooper Jason P. Zanolli said Clites was wearing ahelmet at the time of the crash.

2 Injured in 3 Vehicle Accidents

An accident on Interstate 78 eastbound by Exit 12 in Union Township caused a four mile delay this morning. According to state police, Easton resident Lisa Forder, 40, was driving in the left when she swerved into the center lane. Her car struck a tractor trailer as well as a pick up truck. The pickup, which was driven by 44-year-old Edwin Johnson Jr. of Bethlehem, Pa, ended up on the side of the road, as did Forder's vehicle. 

 

Forder was taken by Clinton First Aid and Rescue Squad to Warren Hospital for back pain. Johnson, who suffered a laceration on his face, is being treated at Hunterdon Medical Center. The tractor trailer which was driven by Michael Thomas, 44, of Windgap, Pa., stayed upright and in it's lane. According to police Thomas was not injured.

 

Forder was issued a motor vehicle summons for reckless driving.

2 Killed, 1 Injured in Western PA Car Accident

A car accident in western Pennsylvania killed two people and injured a third. Authorities say a car went out of control on a curve and slammed into a parked car.Fayette County officials say the accident occurred around 7 a.m. Saturday on Route 166 near Point Marion in the Springhill Township. The Honda Civic hit the parked car then a pole and a tree, and then rolled over an embankment and struck a shed. All three passengers were thrown from the vehicle. 

The Fayette County Coroner’s office says that forty-three-year-old Priscilla Fowler, of Clairton, and forty-five-year-old Donald Sickle, of Smithfield, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Mark Cordwell, 40. Of Lake Lynn was listed as being in critical but stable condition Sunday morning at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W. Va.

Head-On Crash Claims Two Lives

An accident on U.S. 30 in Guilford Township resulted in the death of two women Monday afternoon. Teresa M. Henicle, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene and Karen E. Justice of Gettysburg, Pa. died Tuesday morning at Washington County Hospital. Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner said Henicle was wearing a seat belt, and the cause of death was multiple blunt-force trauma. 

According to Pennsylvania State Police the accident occurred when Justice, driving eastbound on U.S. 30, crossed the center line in her pickup truck causing a head on collision with Henicles 1992 Oldsmobile. 

The accident took place near Snavely’s Garden Corner in the 2100 block of Lincoln Way East, at 12:27 p.m.

Altoona Family Killed in Highway Van Crash

Three members of an Altoona family are dead after an accident on US 522. The family was returning from a vacation in Florida, when they were hit head on by a tractor-trailer south of Berkeley Springs. 

According to the Morgan County Sheriffs Department an eyewitness observed the family's van cross the center line into the southbound lane a quarter-mile south of Tabor Road.  The oncoming tractor-trailer attempted to avoid the van by swerving to the left, while the van's driver went right hitting the truck head on. The driver Fred T. Lecrone Sr., 78, and his wife Gail Lecrone, 78, as well as their son Fred T. Lecrone Jr., 47, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver was taken to War Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. US 522 was shut down for over three hours following the incident. The accident is still under investigation by police.
