Birth control recall affects one million packages

Posted on February 7th, 2012 No Comments

The leading pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, Inc., has announced a national recall of the birth control brand, Lo/Ovral.

This recall was due to a packaging error made by the manufacturing company. These packages of birth control are supposed to contain 21 active birth control pills and seven placebo pills. Some of the defective packets included more active pills than they should and others had sugar pills that were placed out of order.

These mistakes could potentially lead to unsuspected pregnancies in women. Pfizer, Inc. believes that this error only affects approximately 30 packages, but they wanted to be safe so the recall included one million packages of the brand, as well as it’s generic version.

Ground beef recalled in 10 states

Posted on March 21st, 2011 No Comments

Last week, Creekstone Farms Premium Beef and the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a recall on the farm’s ground beef in 10 states.  During routine testing, a wholesaler of the food product found the presence of E. coli bacteria.

The recall includes 14,158 pounds of Creekstone Farms Premium Beef sold in commercial 40 to 60-pound cases.  The food product was sold in Pennsylvania, Washington, Ohio, North Carolina, Missouri, Indiana, Iowa, Georgia, California, and Arizona.

Investigators from the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service believe that it is likely that the product was repackaged by wholesalers and retailers and possibly sold in smaller consumer-size packages.  E. coli can be especially dangerous for children and the elderly and officials recommend that if you have purchased the recalled product to dispose of it immediately.

If you have become ill after consuming a defective or recalled food product, contact the Harrisburg food liability attorneys of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C. at 610-667-7511 today, to learn more about how we can help you.

PA House Rep. to introduce legislation concerning toy injuries

Posted on December 28th, 2010 No Comments

Earlier this month, Pennsylvania House Representative Eugene DePasquale announced that he will be introducting new legislation concerning toy injuries and product liability.  The proposed law involves increased criminal and civil penalties for toy manufacturers and retailers who knowingly sell defective and dangerous toys.

In addition, the law will require wholesalers, distributors, importers and manufacturers to notify customers of a chidren’s product recall within 24 hours of the announcement.  Moreover, retailers would be required to remove recalled products from store shelves within 3 days.

DePasquale said of the proposed legislation, “It’s mind-boggling that such a law is required, but there are people out there who would risk a child’s life by selling unsafe products just to make a quick buck.  With the holidays before us and so many families struggling, some parents may not notice that a deal on a toy is ‘too good to be true’ until it’s too late”.

If your child has been injured playing with a defective or recalled toy, contact the Harrisburg toy injury lawyers of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C. at 610-667-7511 today to learn more about filing a product liability lawsuit.

5 million containers of baby formula recalled

Posted on September 27th, 2010 No Comments

Last Wednesday, drug maker and baby formula producer Abbott Laboratories announced the voluntary recall of 5 million containers of Similac brand powder-based baby formula.

Abbott decided to issue the recall after the company found small bugs in an area of their Michigan manufacturing plant.  Officials with the company were concerned that small bugs or larvae could be present in the product.  Abbott executives consulted with investigators from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration who determined that there was no “immediate health risk” associated with the products.

The affected products were sold in 8 ounce, 12.4 ounce and 12.9 ounce containers.  The product could cause stomachache or digestion problems.

Philadelphia Man Killed in I-80 Crash

Posted on April 8th, 2010 No Comments

A man from Philadelphia was killed in a car accident Wednesday on Interstate 80.

According to officials with the Pennsylvania State Police at Rockview, 19 year-old David K. Doughty Jr. was traveling west on Interstate 80 near mile marker 159 when he lost control of his vehicle. Police say Doughty’s car cut across two lanes of traffic, went off the right shoulder of the roadway, and crashed into a rock embankment. The car flipped onto it’s roof and came to rest, authorities say.

Centre County Coroner Scott Sayers said Doughty was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, and was partially ejected from the vehicle in the wreck. The accident occurred shortly after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, and closed two lanes of traffic on Interstate 80.

The accident is still under investigation, and police are awaiting the results of an autopsy.

If you have lost a loved one to an avoidable tragedy, the law allows you some recourse in the form of a lawsuit against the individuals or institutions responsible for the wrongful death of your loved one.
