Harrisburg couple injured after a bear attack

Posted on October 12th, 2011 No Comments

A couple residing in Harrisburg was attacked by a black bear when it followed their pet dog into their home.

The black bear had spotted the dog which was outside of the couple’s home and began chasing the animal, ultimately ending up inside of the house. The bear became violent with the residents of the home and both were injured in the attack and taken to a local hospital.

After the attack the bear exited the home and officers were planning a search around the neighboring areas to capture the animal. The bear would be put down if it possessed the characteristics of having rabies.

Bear attacks are not common in this area and when they do occur the bear is usually searching for food.

If you or someone you know has been attacked by an animal, please contact the Harrisburg Personal Injury Lawyers of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C. by calling 610-667-7511 today.

Hospital see rise in dog bite, animal attack patients

Approximately 4.5 million people in the United States are the victim of a dog bite or injuries incurred in an animal attack every year.

Data shows that over the past 16 years, the number of patients going to the hospital with injuries from an animal attack every year has nearly doubled.  The U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality says that in 1993, hospital in the U.S. saw 5,100 patients with dog bites and in 2008, hospital saw 9,500 patients with dog bites.  Also, government data concerning animal attacks says that people living in rural areas were four times more likely to suffer injuries in an animal attack than people living in mid-sized to big cities.

Nancy Hill, a member of the National Animal Control Association’s board of directors, stated, “A lot of people thing dog bites are from some [stray] running around, and no one knows where it lives.  That happens to some extent, but to a greater extent its the owned dog.”

If you or someone you love has been injured from a dog bite or animal attack, contact the Harrisburg dog bite attorneys of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C. at 610-667-7511 to discuss filing a personal injury suit against the animal’s owner.
