A retired priest drove into a crowd of churchgoers after mass last friday, at a western pennsylvania church, leaving four injured and one dead. The former priest had just finished assisting with the good friday service when his car sped into a crowd of people on the front steps of the Saint Maurice Church in Forrest Hills. Pastor John W. Skirtich announced at mass Friday night that 89-year-old Madeline Rommell had died of her injuries five hours after the crash. Four other people were hurt in the accident, but according to Forrest Hills Mayor Ray Heller Jr. their injuries were not life threatening.
Parishioner Angela Thomas said the priest told her the car accelerated by itself. "He told me the accelerator of his car just went on its own and he could not stop… He is just the sweetest priest. He's in shock. He is just devastated." Forrest Hills police are still investigating the accident.
