Swing Set Dangers
There was a time when no playground or backyard was complete without a swing set and a slide for children to play on. There were numerous types of swings that all provided endless hours of entertainment for children and adults alike. Unfortunately, over the years, it has been determined that there are numerous hazards of swing sets that cannot be combated, regardless of the number of precautions taken.
One of the first dangers of swing sets is not a problem for the child or person on the swing so much as a serious threat to people who may be around the swing set on the ground. If one walks in front of the set at the wrong time or doesn’t pay enough attention to the swinging children, it is possible to be seriously injured by a flying child’s feet as the swing moves forward. The injuries are made more serious when the contact is between feet and head.
A danger to a child actually on the swing occurs when the child is feeling adventurous and decides that jumping off of the swing is a great idea. While it provides an amazing sensation of flying, the landing is not guaranteed to be gentle or even safe. Broken arms, legs, feet, and ankles are all possible when jumping off of the swing.
Other injuries involving swings can occur if a child falls off of the swing backwards. All children love to see how high they can make the swing go but it is possible to fall. If the fall occurs at the pinnacle of the swing’s path, the result can be a severe injury.
