Bus Accidents

Large buses, commonly known as charter buses, are somewhat notorious for getting into accidents. These large vehicles carry a large number of people and can be extremely dangerous to other vehicles when they are involved in an accident.

Bus accidents occur for a number of reasons but one of the scariest reasons is an inebriated bus driver. Many accidents that occur happen because the bus driver was drunk at the time or had ingested an illegal substance. In a shockingly large percentage of cases, the bus driver had had previous arrests or convictions for drunk driving or driving under the influence.

Another cause of bus accidents is excessive speed. Buses that take people from place to place, like Greyhound or Megabus, operate on a strict schedule. To meet that schedule, drivers may be tempted to push the speed limit or just ignore it to some degree. This creates problems in the event of an unexpected slow down because the bus can take so long to stop or slow down.

Another problem with excessive speed occurs on turns. Buses have a very high center of gravity and so they must go slowly around turns or risk tipping over. When they tip, passengers have nothing holding them into their seats. If the bus tips all the way onto its side, the glass windows can break causing extensive injuries.

Overall, the majority of bus drivers are safe, but there are still instances in which accidents occur.
